Middle East Sociology Working Group
Minutes, November 20, 2016

The Middle East Sociology Working Group met for brunch at Globe Restaurant near the Middle East Studies Association’s conference site in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 20, 2016. The meeting was scheduled on the final day of the conference so as not to conflict with a midday panel the previous day, “No Going Back: The Road to Gender Transformation in the Arab World.” Unfortunately, meeting at the end of the conference may have accounted for a slightly reduced turnout. Nonetheless, we welcomed several new members to our group and had a series of lively conversations.

Our petition drive for a Global Middle East section at the American Sociological Association remains about 30 signatories short of the ASA’s threshold of 200.

In other news, our cadre is growing enough that a publisher has inquired about authors interested in producing a textbook on Middle East Sociology. If you are interested, please get in touch with me at kurzman@unc.edu.
